Architecture as a Career

Architecture can perhaps best be defined as the art and science of managing the creation of the built environment. This would include the spaces in and around buildings, and can involve the design of single family residence or an entire new town.

Architects have always been artists and scientist. Today they are also expected to be mangers, leaders of the team, and especially creative thinkers and problem solvers. They are responsible for the successful co-ordination of all the facets of a project from it's inception to completion.

Qualifications

In order to be accepted at a tertiary institution to study Architecture, one requires a Matric, with University Exemption. Mathematics is generally a requirement. The course structure is continuously evaluated to meet the demands of developing technology and evolving society. The general subjects include Design, Construction, Town Planning and a host of technical subjects ranging from water reticulation to electricity. Computer Aided Draughting forms part of the course. Courses vary from 4 years at Technikon to 5 to 6 years at University

Professional Registration

Upon graduation, the Architect enters a two- year in-service training period. After passing a Professional Practice entrance examination, the Architect may register with the South African Council for Architects. This is a requirement for practising as an Architect in South Africa. Minimum requirements for the registration of Technologists and others in the profession are being investigated at present.

Career Opportunities

Architecture can be practised in various capacities of professional expertise. A medium sized office in South Africa could consist of 2 or 3 Professionally Registered Architects who design and manage the projects with the assistance of a few Technologists, and Draughts people. Administrative staff provide the require support to the entire Practice. Lecturing Staff at Universities and Technikons are often registered Architects, and may also be in private practice. Opportunities are available to join the in-house professional team of a developer. Large corporations also employ Architects in a variety of positions. Various career opportunities exist in the public sector for suitably qualified people of the construction professions. Architects often specialise in a particular field of expertise, like hospital design, shopping centre design or residential work.
